The Greatest Love

Posted on May 8, 2026May 7, 2026 by Virtual Afro Woman

The bond between a mother and child is very strong. The only way to cause a break is if something major happens to interrupt it. For over 30 years, I have experienced the role of being the child. As a daughter, I have relied on my mother for many things over the years. When you are a  kid you sometimes overlook what your mother has to do for you from the time you are born. As we start to get older, we often think of being an adult and no longer being under the control of our mother. You begin to think your mother does not have to worry about you and your needs once this happens. But, in the end, this bond is the greatest love for most woman. No matter what a mother will always worry abouy her child until she takes her last breath.

Recently, I became a mother for the first time. When I look at my child I can’t believe that this little human was inside of my belly for 9 months. The bond was instant as the first thing done was having him placed on my chest after delivery. I have this tiny human who relies on me now and for many more years to come. Currently, I am his food source, I make sure he’s comfortable, and I make sure he feels protected.

Today, I now write knowing the perspective of my mother, her mother (my grandmother), and the many generations of mothers in my ancestry before her. Also that of the mini connectors of aunts and other women. So many times we think the greatest love of all happens in a romantic relationship. If you do have a spouse, you can love them and you make sure they feel it. But the bond between a mother and child comes natural and should be protected.

As we go into Mother’s Day weekend may we show love to our original greatest love, our Mothers. And, if you happen to have a child by birth or one you raised may you receive and feel the love they give you. This year will be my first time adding a new connector to my bond. I am no longer just a daughter in this. I am now a mother and I will do my best to nurture this love. As mentioned in the past. A mother is not just the person who birthed you but someone who has guided you and made an impact on your life. Celebrate your mother, your grandmother, aunt, godmother, and/or anyone who made you feel like their greatest love. On the Friday, I wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! Enjoy your day!
