What Am I Supposed to Eat Now?

Posted on September 4, 2023September 4, 2023 by Virtual Afro Woman

The human body is a wonderful thing yet so complicated. We must make sure we take care of it as best we can along with going through the many trials life brings. So many people are dealing with various medical conditions and it’s often suggested to adjust food choices to manage symptoms when one has diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, fibroids, or cancer among so many other diagnoses.

I have Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (Hives) and this is the name due to there not being an underlying cause detected by the many healthcare professionals I went to seek help. With this there is one major event that causes the hives and instead of lasting a day or so it lasts for months or years disappearing and returning along with swelling of the face, hands, and feet, which was the case for me. I am happy to say this is not a life threatening condition, so I can’t complain too much, but it is very stressful which can be another trigger. When my body is at the height of its initial reaction, I usually have issues with certain foods and breaking out soon after eating them.

Now food sensitivities or allergies affects so many people and you are often forced into making drastic changes to your diet. Since the last course of my condition, I was told I was allergic to gluten; I did completely without for 7 months with no major improvements, so I started paying attention to more stuff and decided to reduce soy. After this, I saw improvements and I have stuck to this method for the last two years; I love gluten products like bread and pasta very much and who would have thought soy was in Jolly Ranchers candy. In the end, I must do what’s best for my body and if that means giving up something I enjoy, I am fully committed.

There are some many foods that can cause inflammation in the body that we don’t recognize until symptoms start to present themselves and this includes:

  • Wheat/Rye
  • Dairy
  • Fried Foods
  • Red Meat
  • Artificial Chemicals and Food Additives
  • Refined Sugars
  • Processed Foods

There are also so many foods that you can always rely on to be healthy and are anti-inflammatory, some of these items are:

  • Fruits including watermelon, tomatoes, and pineapple which are all antioxidants protecting your cells
  • Vegetables including dark leafy greens for fiber and vitamin C
  • Fresh poultry for iron and zinc
  • Wild Caught Fish for high levels of Omega 3 fats
  • Nuts and Seeds are unsaturated fats that help with diabetes and heart disease
  • Turmeric for digestion and respiratory needs
  • Olive Oil is heart healthy and lowers blood sugar

If not for this condition, I’m sure my diet would not have changed so much, but in reality we should all do our best to nurture our body before these medical events arise. I have come to enjoy various gluten and soy free products, but not all products are created equal. I can say I am a partial picky eater and what I list below are brands that are good in my opinion, but the only negative is that it will cost you more. So, give it all a try and you too may like the products (check your local grocery stores) or the idea of eating healthy food such as the anti-inflammatory items above. Let us know what you think, because HEALTHY FOOD PUTS YOUR BODY IN A HEALTHY MOOD!
