In recent times there have been many cases involving public figures in relation to assault or abuse. Having public opinion in these major cases can be very difficult for the parties involved. When it appears that both sides have credible stories, who do you believe? Do you look at gender, race, or class? Or do you look at the individual for their public persona? The ultimate lesson is not to choose sides but to learn how to recognize toxicity in relationships before it gets to this point. We all deserve love and with this month being about that, here’s to removing negative weight.
As humans, we are not expected to get along with every person we come across, but it takes a bigger person to learn how to limit negative interactions. When it comes to intimate relationships, this can be challenging especially when you are learning each other’s personal traits in more detail. In learning this, all situations are not perfect, but they should never lead to abuse of another. In friendships, you should not have to worry about someone who brings your joy to a minimum. Our friendships are there for a reason, but if the people we give this title are not bringing any purpose to us, tis the season to remove them.
Just note, there are moments where time apart and then regrouping with better strategies can bring the positive energy back. It depends on the extent of the past toxicity in the relationship when you decide to try again in the future. Whether a friendship or a romantic relationship, what are some toxic traits to look for if the relationship may not be nurturing you anymore?
1. Increased jealously in situations that don’t warrant it.
2. Unable to trust their actions and behaviors.
3. Disrespect/shame you in front of others
4. Wants to control your behaviors.
5. You are always there to support but can’t expect the same in return.
What are some ways to remove yourself from toxic behaviors?
1. Have a quiet conversation with the person involved to let them know how you feel.
2. List the pros and cons of the relationship at hand and see which outweighs the other.
3. Remove yourself from the relationship, aligning yourself with supportive people.
4. Tune in to your emotions and understand it will hurt but speak to someone if you need.
5. Find fun activities/hobbies to distract you and rediscover who you are.
Here’s to leaving all the negative energy of toxic people behind as we continue to move through 2024 in this month of love.
