The Movie Mash

Posted on October 30, 2024November 1, 2024 by Virtual Afro Woman

Tomorrow is Halloween! It’s a holiday I don’t celebrate as much now that I’m older. But it’s one that I have many memories of. I can remember having a Halloween party at my house and my older cousin dressed as Freddy Krueger. Of course, all of us small kids had heart attacks. I remember never being one to ask to go trick-or-treating, but I loved helping to give out candy. There was a year I wanted a Power Rangers costume and the store was out of stock. I was a cheerleader instead. I can remember being a young adult and going to the NYC Halloween Parade, my first and only time there. Now, my way to celebrate is by watching newer movies and old classic movies of horror/suspense/thriller/family-friendly genres.

There are so many movies out there to choose from. There are a few I watch more than others and a few newer films I would add to my collection. So, let’s bring in the old and add in the new. For the purpose of this post, are you ready to sound old, the classic movies are from the 20th century (Before the 2000s). The newer films are those that came after the start of the 21st century (2000s and beyond). Here are my top 5 classics and 5 newer films that are all in my top 50 list.

The Old

IT (1990)

I enjoyed the newer version, but

Tim Curry’s Pennywise is still scarier.

Scream (1996)

The beginning of leathface and a movie that brought something fresh to horror.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Freddy Krueger will forever live in our dreams and nightmares.

Casper (1995)

The friendly ghost Casper brings laughs in this family friendly movie.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

When this movie first came out, it was a must see.

I still consider it M. Night Shymalan’s best movie.

The New

The Purge: Anarachy (2014)

The first movie in the series was good, but this sequel changed the game of evil.

Identity (2003)

This pscyho thriller will have you trying to figure out who-dunit, but in the end, there’s a twist.

Joy Ride (2001)

When a prank goes wrong while on the road.

Saw (2004)

The start of Jigsaw and his smarts.

Final Destination (2000)

The movie that had you questioning fate.

Now that you know my selection, what’s your top 5 movies to watch for Halloween?
