The movie ‘Origin’ directed by Ava Duvernay was just fully released in theaters. The film is based on the book ‘Caste’ by Isabel Wilkerson relating to stories of race, love, and loss. I have yet to see the movie, but the promotion has been increasing in recent days. While hearing interviews, I was shocked to find out that the lead actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor gave out flyers to promote the movie. A well-respected actress, had to do this. The studio failed to promote the film during it’s earlier release in December 2023. I didn’t hear of the film until I saw the preview when seeing “The Color Purple.” The question that came to mind is how we as a society and people of color can support each other. Whether with movie releases depicting our stories or with family/friends, the idea of support should not be lost.
Being supportive can be defined as helping or holding something or someone up. In the case of major releases of film and television, it’s our job to continue to support the stories told. In more recent years, many states and political figures in the U.S. have been trying to erase the past. Our future should not be defined by our past, but our past cannot be erased as it inspires a better future.
The idea of race and discrimination is still a relevant topic and until we are all treated the same, stories must be told. As the human race we are all beautiful people, and we must all support each other. Until this day comes, we must support the projects that represent us. So, go see the movie, ‘Origin,’ see ‘The Color Purple,’ see ‘American Fiction,’ see ‘The Book of Clarence,’ watch ‘Rustin,’ and continue to support these projects.
