If you’re a fan of horror and want to see one that incorporates social issues, season 2 of Them-The Scare is one to watch. The story is different from the first season but they do slightly tie into each other. In this season, you have Deborah Ayorinde, actress from the first season playing a new character, Dawn. In the storyline, she is a Detective investigating the murder of a foster mother in home. During the investigation, other crimes begin to take place of a similar nature, so the search is on for a serial killer. As time goes on, we meet the Detectives family, that includes her mother played by Pam Grier, and her ex-husband played by Iman Shumpert. Also, we meet Edmund, played by Luke James. He’s an aspiring actor who can’t catch a break and goes down a bad road.
The history of horror and science fiction with a majority Black cast dates back many years with 1930’s Hellbound Train and 1940’s Son of Ingagi. Then came the Blaxploitation era of film, with movies such as 1972’s Blacula and 1976’s J.D.’s Revenge. In the last few decades Black horror hasn’t been promoted to the masses with movies such as 1995’s “Tales from the Hood” and 2001’s “Bones.” When Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” came out in 2017, he helped with the crossover to the mass public. Since then, we have seen film and TV shows such as “Lovecraft Country,” “Black Box,” and “They Cloned Tyrone.”
Let’s continue to support these works of art and be more inclusive in what the horror genre. Check out Them-The Scare when you can and also some another work I previously Spotlighted here.
