Describe something you learned in high school.
It was in High School where I experienced a great deal of diversity. As a Black woman, I grew up in an area with mostly Black and Hispanic people. The schools I attended prior was the same, until I entered high school. On my first day, going into my home room, I looked around and saw one person almost as dark as me. I later discovered this person was actually Indian. After this, I knew my high school experience was going to be different.
As time went on and after removing the small stereotypes, it was in these years that I realized our commonality as people from different backgorunds. Yes, there will always be differences because we have different cultures and environments that reared us. But we are alike in many ways. Even, when it came to my teachers, they were diverse as well. I enjoyed most of them because they found ways to relate to us all.
Having this experience before entering adulthood is very important. I think this would make the world a better place because these are the years that form many of our decisions and thoughts. Diversity is the key to life and I wish this was promoted more to children and adolescents.
