My Body or My Car

Posted on March 22, 2024March 22, 2024 by Virtual Afro Woman

In the past year, I heard many stories of people suddenly diagnosed with various medical conditions. When this happens, it can be difficult to work or to engage in the work that requires more energy. They are then labeled as having a working disability.

As an Occupational Therapist, if I even injury my ankle, I’m unable to do my job. For someone who works in an office, this does not stop them from working. I have worked with patients in their prime working years. One day they find themselves admitted to the hospital and I come to assess them. Upon evaluation, one of the first questions I ask is if they are currently working. Then whether their job requires standing or sitting. This answer makes a big difference. If your endurance is so low you can’t stand for 5 minutes, you definitely can’t go back right away. So, ask yourself the question, how can you prepare…

Have you ever heard of Disability Insurance?

If injured on the job, I hear so many stories of people waiting weeks for their payments to kick in due to slow processing rates. Then when you receive it, the money is often much lower than your regular paycheck.

This is where disability insurance comes into play. Just as we insure our cars which have a short lifespan compared to us as humans, what about insuring your livelihood? If you can’t work for a few months due to injury and your money is low, that car you paid insurance on for years and still have a car note for has gone down the drain. The car is repossessed.

Think about it. I recently acquired a policy with a rider that even adds protection for not being able to perform my current job duties but still allows collection while working a job that may be in an office. There are even whole life insurance policies that also have disability insurance riders; this protects both your life after death and that while you’re still around. This country I live in can be great in many ways but when it comes to the working class, if you can’t work due to illness or injury the support is simply not there in the way we need it to be. Below you will find some insurance companies. Explore each of them. Find the best rates for the money you need. Remember you can customize a policy that works for you. The more you want will require a health assessment.

This chart is an example of what was originally promoted to me by agents. For me the price was too high, so I removed the extended partial rider and this reduced my payment even more. Now, if I get injured today, after 6 months of claimed disability I will receive $1,725 per month until the age of 65. With the policy I can increase my insurance if needed as well.
