In James McBride most recent work, we meet a community of people in Chicken Hill, a small area in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Here you have a local grocery store that is at it’s center; owned by a Jewish family and frequented by African American neighbors in a time of segregation. We take a ride down memory lane seeing the history and connections between the groups of people in situations that are not always positive. In the end, the book delivers a message about togetherness and doing what’s morally right even when color may influence the opposite. So, enjoy the book and share your thoughts below.
