There are many industries that are dealing with workers who are frustrated with their jobs. For myself, after 10+ years as an Occupational Therapist working a steady job and side jobs over the years, I’m in a work funk. Working with kids is a rewarding experience. But between changes in parenting affecting kids behaviors, technology, and how management treat staff, I’m in a mid-career crisis. This is not myself alone as many of my co-workers feel similarly.
Now, why is this so common right now? Why is upper management trickling this stress downward to everyone? Most of it is money. With increased job responsibilities, low wages, and short staff, companies still want to stay rich or reduce spending to maintain funds. We live in a country that ultimately forces people to work so much to live. Many people work and never reap the full benefits of their labor in retirement. Many people get sick or even pass away after years of service. There are unions out there to fight for some, but not every job has one. I don’t see much changing in jobs in the next few years. So, as an employee, how can we get out of the work funk?
- Take mental health days: I don’t take off from work much, usually it’s only when I have an appointment. But, working with kids, I have more days off than usual, so I have many breaks to reset. If you are lucky to have accumulated days, try taking a break every few weeks or months.
- Have in office/service celebrations: Joining together to celebrate major events, birthdays, etc. of staff can create good morale even with stressful days. Creating a positive energy around the negative situations can go a long way.
- Find an outside hobby: Looking forward to other things can take your mind away from work stress. Whether going to the gym or picking up crocheting, find something to occupy your ‘me time.’
- Go outside for lunch break: Unfortunately my lunch is only an half hour and I eat slow, so I have to wait until after work most days. But getting a temporary break from the work environment to get some fresh air can be beneficial.
There are only a few more weeks of this colder weather. Hopefully, as the days get longer and brighter, it brings more positive energy. Maybe the warmth will lighten the mood for upper management as well.
