The memories we all have of the holiday season vary as some are good and others may not be so much, but for me this is my favorite time of the year with wonderful memories. The purpose of the season is to spread love and happiness. For myself, I take this time to reflect on the year past and try to give as much as I can to those I love and those in need. My spirit is happier as I watch movies, listen to music, and wrap gifts for others that I put a lot of thought into.
When I reflect on time, I can also recall so many of my holidays in the years before.
I remember one year when the first doll I got that could drink, peed on my pajamas soon after because I forgot to put the diaper on.
I remember Santa forgetting to eat my cookies and my mother reassuring me he was just too full to eat anymore after going to other’s kids home.
I remember getting my first camera and taking pictures of my family, having them developed a few days later.
I remember the year my mother left the roll of Santa’s wrapping paper right next to the tree.
I remember last year braiding my Grandmother’s hair which turned out to be her last Christmas before passing away just after the new year.
So, what are your memories of the season?
How do we move forward in creating good memories even when our past have some sad ones?
For this let’s put our phones down for some time before taking pictures and just enjoy the moment as this is usually when the most important memories are created.
What activities can be done to create traditional memories?
- Cooking: Whether it’s making Sweet Potato Pies on your own or baking cookies with the children, the joy of cooking something delicious that you and/or others enjoy creates beautiful memories.
- Gifting: Watching your spouse or children open gifts revealing various new toys and gadgets is always a loving memory.
- Outfits: Wearing festive pajamas or sweaters is always a good time when you see the interesting choices.
- Fun: Playing board games or video games can bring some competition to the room leading to some laughs
- Décor: Making ornaments as a crafting activity or buying ornaments that represent your personality or special events in your life can create lasting memories as they continue to get used each year.
To end, let’s all remember that every moment is an opportunity to create a handcrafted memory to be replayed for years to come.
