The world of intercollegiate competitive figure skating has just taken a turn. Howard University became the first HBCU (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) to have a team. This past weekend, they participated in the Southeast Division competition. This is a big milestone for a group of young women who found each other and went through hurdles together to get support and funding to form the team. Hearing this story and knowing that today is the first day of Women’s History Month, shows me just how powerful we are together.
For so long now, as women we had to fight for what we want. In the end, with consistency, we make it happen. We always find a way. Now with progress comes conflicts as our society always finds ways to influence and put us against each other. The model for many spaces is that there can only be one; one woman that is. When you look at the number of women leading countries there are few as compared to men. For women who are CEOs of top companies, there are few. When you look at entertainment many women are used as pawns for companies banking off their conflicts making it the top of their category. Even now here in America as it relates to reproductive rights, you have a few women who side with this male dominated society, taking away the rights women fought so hard to get.
In the end, togetherness should be our best friend because with it we can become even greater. I saw a quote by Iyanla Vanzant, I want us to think about this for this month of female power…
“The way to achieve your own success is to
be willing to help somebody else get it first.”
The energy we give out is what we receive. So, if you see someone who’s successful, don’t be jealous. With the right energy, you too will get there with hard work just like these young women at Howard University. Their first step in making their dream happen was by forming a sisterhood and going after what they wanted. If you don’t have one, this is the month to get out their and find these other like minded women.
