Last year, I wrote a post titled, Pinky Blues to speak on the importance of educating oneself on breast cancer. I also stated that Black women are more likely to die from Breast Cancer than any other racial/ethnic group here in the U.S. In March, I posted about Endometriosis Awareness Month, I spoke of a Youtube blogger who died from cervical cancer after a misdiagnosis. Now it has been reported that the American Cancer Society is launching a study called VOICES of Black Women to help to find out what is driving these statistics for some cancer types even as overall risk of dying has declined.
This study hopes to enroll 100,000 Black Women in the research. They will then follow those who qualify for up to a 30-year period through questioning about lifestyle, access to healthcare, etc. to help identify the problem. I’m excited about this because in many cases there is far less answers for many of the life-threatening health conditions that affect Black people the most. Now, there has been a history of mistrust from Black people in healthcare and research, but the time is now for use to protect the future generations. At any time, you can remove yourself from the study, but you have to be from the listed states to qualify as well as be between the ages 25 and 55.
So, if you are a Black Women or know someone who qualifies for this study, make sure to spread the word. To learn more about the study click here.
