I Got a Story to Tell

Posted on April 12, 2024April 11, 2024 by Virtual Afro Woman

There were many memoirs recently released by some famous people we know. There’s Whoopi Goldberg, RuPaul, Leslie Jones, and Billy Dee Williams among others. I enjoy reading Autobiographies and Memoirs to get to know the person better. There have been some books written by people who have now passed away such as the great Cicely Tyson. It made me think about how their story will live on for many generations.

In my younger years, I would journal on and off. Then when it came time to declutter my space, I would look back on what I wrote years later and then throw them away. Now, I think back on this decision. I should have kept them because they showed my thoughts at an age I can never go back to. The question I want to ask is,

Have you ever thought about writing your story?

We all live a life that is different from the next person. The events we experience can either be unique to us or similar to another person. But if we don’t tell our story, no one may ever know. We live in a time now where many elders from the generations before technology are leaving this world. Before technology, people gathered to tell stories that were passed down through generations. There are people who create online content, but within families what are the stories being passed down.

So, what are some ways you can tell your story for your family to have for the generations to come…

  • Journaling: a way to keep track of your personal thoughts and feelings. It can be done to help work through your own emotions. You learn to open up to the idea of self expression.
  • Video Diary: many of us record videos of fun times, but how about more personal times. A time when you are alone and want to go deep. You can document the events that are happening in your life and the feelings surrounding them in your voice.
  • E-Book: Maybe you would like to tell the story of your life for more people to have access to. There are many people who may want to hear your story to help them get through circumstances that may be similar to you. There are so many platforms to create an e-book such as Amazon and Barnes&Noble.

To end, remember, you are special and your story is worth it. Think about it because I know you would like your memory to live on for generations to come too.

I have thought about writing letters more so than journaling. It would be something for my son. Something to let him understand more about how I am dealing with our everyday. I think about as a kid you don’t understand in the moment why parents make some decisions but as you age you get to understand. I thought it would be good for him to have those thoughts to reflect on when he is older.
