Today is the day. One where you may be traveling. Some will be preparing to cook. Others will just be relaxing. Whether or not one of these describes you today, having a film as a backdrop can help get you in the Thanksgiving mood. Every year Halloween movies are grouped and promoted and then it skips into Christmas movies, overlooking Thanksgiving. There are many great movies out there and here are a few I have enjoyed very much over the years. They bring the laughs, the drama, and the music. So, here they are…
Soul Food: A great movie thats indirectly connected the Thanksgiving. It centers around a family that gathers weekly for Sunday dinner. When family drama and the death of it’s matriarch takes places, we see this family break tradition. As we go through the movie, we get to see whether or not they find their way back to the traditional family dinner on Sundays. The soundtrack to this movie was on point as well and can get you in the mood.
Four Brothers: When their adopted mother is killed, four brothers return home to mourn and investigate the circumstances. Taking place around the holidays, the brothers who have spent years away from each other, work to reform the bond they once had.
Son-In-Law: A girl from a small town goes away to college to a big city. When she returns home for the Thanksgiving holiday, she comes with a “fiance.” This soon to be son-in-law brings a different energy to her family, one not seen in this small town.
The Wiz: A classic musical based on the stage play of the same name. This movie is a take on the Wizard of Oz, which I love as well. You have Dorothy, whose from Harlem. She leaves her family’s Thanksgiving dinner to go for a walk with her dog in tow. She then gets swept away in a snow storm that takes her to a different place.
Love at the Thanksgiving Day Parade: A beautiful Hallmark love story centered around the planning of the Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. We get to see the joy the parade brings to many families and the star of the film.
Hopefully you get a chance to watch one of these movies. And, I hope it gets you into the holiday spirit. In advance, may you all have a beautiful Thanksgiving Day.
