I have a dream, that we all will love one another… This is a song I remember singing in the 1st grade with my class on stage. Here in the U.S., we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on his actual birthdate this year. In a country with a dark history that includes holidays celebrating some questionable people or events, this one celebrates a man who gave his life to fight for equality between all people.
For this day, how about we honor his memory. We only have a set time to be the best we can and to give the best. We can make sure we present kindness to others. Try to give to others with our time and knowledge to continue generational progress. To vote in elections to continue the path to see change. To judge people for the content of their character and not their physical/religious backgrounds.
Since his death in 1968, there have been many changes for the better. This does not mean there is no room for more to be done. There still fails to be equality in many areas that are necessary in our country and in the rest of the world. We may have all gotten comfortable with where we are now, even as we see so much negative events continuing to happen. We continue to loose too many innocent lives as people have forgotten about the message of this man and many others.
Some of Dr. King’s greatest quotes to reflect on are…
- “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
- “The time is always right to do what is right.”
- “True peace is not the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”
- “I have decided to stick with love, Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
- “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
Along with some other great leaders, this man used nonviolent techniques to spread his message. Let’s use the day to better understand or learn about the dream. Below you will find some great work that have come over the years that depict the issues that plagued our country and beyond.
