This beautiful Earth Angel we live on is changing and it’s due to human influence. We see the large fluctuations of weather, where it is 70 degrees today and 40 degrees tomorrow. Also, there were the deadly wildfires in California among other recent events. April is Earth Month and there are many small things we can do to help take better care of her.
If you’re like me, you enjoy shopping. The more years you are alive the more you may accumulate. Some of our items may eventually become old and worn and we usually throw them away. To help decrease waste we can find more uses of these items to extend their life. We can…
- Rip up that old T-shirt into smaller pieces and make rags for cleaning.
- Cut up the item into smaller pieces and use them in sewing a new item
- Use it as wrapping paper for a gift
- Repair the item with added pieces
In today’s world, we use a lot of technology. Most of them now require electricity to recharge rather than using short-term batteries. There are many things we can do to conserve energy overall. We can…
- Turn off devices or put them into sleep mode when not being used
- Unplug chargers when not in use
- Unplug our cell phone after it’s fully charged
- Turn the lights off when you leave the room
- Use LED lightbulbs
- Air dry some clothes instead of always using the dryer
Water covers most of the Earth. It is used for survival for drinking and hygiene purposes. Also, the land (grass/flowers/vegetation) needs water to survive. Controlling the amount of water used outside of drinking can help make sure the supply is always there. So much of the land is in drought conditions and our preservation of supply is important. We can…
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth
- Reducing the amount of time in the shower
- Make sure the dishwasher is full before running it.
Our garbage consists of food scraps, plastic, paper, glass, and many other things. As of April 2nd, New York City has made composting mandatory. If the rule is not followed there can be fines. Composting is a method of recycling using food scraps, leaves, and soiled paper to create the dirt that can be added to the Earth’s vegetation. There has been a bigger push for this in other states, but there are other ways we can make sure our trash is not harmful to mother Earth.
- Recycle paper/plastic/food scraps by separating them and placing them into their own bins for trash collection
- Dispose of old electronics and appliances appropriately to assigned store or call trash company in your local area for appropriate collection
- Use reusable or paper bags at the grocery store
- Buy upcycled or recycled clothing
There are other ways to take care of her that were not mentioned. The goal is to promote being more intentional about our decisions. This planet we live on is all we know, and it should be our mission to protect it for all the future lives who will inhabit it. The challenge of the month involves being able to demonstrate a behavior each day to help. There are 26 days left in this month. It’s not too late to make that change.
