September is Falls Prevention Month. Although, falls are more likely to happen over the age of 65, it is never too early to increase your awareness. As a child, you may have fallen many times as you learn to balance yourselves within the environment. You often bounce back with no problem. Now the older you get in age, a fall can be hard to bounce back from, as it can end in a more serious injury. I have worked with many older adults with broken hips/pelvic bones because of an unexpected fall. I have worked with adults who had other medical issues but with dizziness had recurrent falls. One of the best things we all can do is learn about balance exercises, be aware of your health, and to recognize hazards within your environment.
About 5 years ago, I started doing yoga as a tool to help with maintenance of my muscular flexibility, joint mobility, and of course my balance/posture. When I engage in yoga, I feel a lightness in my body with reduced stress. When I was 11 years old, I was told I had scoliosis, and after I turned 30 years old, I knew it was time to work on these things to help as I go into middle and older adulthood. So, what are some great stretches that can be done regularly for this…

With falls, being aware of your health and environment is very important as well. As we go through life our health changes as well. You may be taking medication whose side effect affects your balance. Your vision may have decreased, and glasses are needed. And for anyone going through a surgical procedure or even childbirth, your center of gravity can temporarily change. Also, in our environment, we may not be in control outside of our homes, but inside, we can reduce fall risks. By removing trip hazards and reducing any low vision areas, this is possible. These include throw rugs without reinforcement to the floor, shoes/toys on the floor, and motion lights in the hallways.
To end, let’s spread the message. The month of September is Falls Prevention Month. It is never too early to think about it and be aware. And for the older adults, now is the time to continue to make decisions to prevent them.
