Clean Closet = More Mental Space

Posted on March 17, 2025March 16, 2025 by Virtual Afro Woman

At the end of this week spring will be upon us. This is the season of warmer temperatures with cool breezes, more hours of daylight, and more rainy days. During the early parts of the season, I often put away my heavy winter clothing and boots. I swap them out for loose clothing and lighter footwear. In the process of this swap comes a peace of mind as I declutter and rejuvenate my closets and overall space within my home. Most of us don’t live in large mansions with lots of space. Being that I live in a smaller space, here are 3 things that take place during this time in to create more mental space to enjoy life…

  1. Give Away: Going through what you have and deciding what you can pass on to another is a good step. For myself, I have maintained a specific size range in clothing for the last few years. Whether from my own shopping habits or from gifts I can say I have accumulated a lot of clothes. Two times a year during the swap of clothing I purge some of these items. Whether or not you can still fit or not fit the items, parting with them can be hard. But, in the end having so much clothing/shoes can be suffocating to the space you have to live. The thought process must then move to, when is the last time I wore it. If you can’t remember donate it or pass it on to family/friends.
  2. Consolidate: There are times when I have this item over here and another over there in the same category. If I have one very large tote bag, maybe I can place my smaller purses inside of them to take up less space. If I have 2 light sweaters on separate hangers, maybe I can layer them on the same one. This can open space to make what you have fit without looking so disheveled.
  3. Organize: I was lucky to move into my home with a wire closet system  was in place. I reorganized them in the way that served me best, but this was something I didn’t know I needed. Most times your closet may have one large bar across to hang and then you have items stuffed at the top and the bottom. There is still possibility of stuffing items but the closet is sectioned off in a way that it can’t be done in mass. So, when I take the time to tidy up each section it allows me to find what I need better.

Springtime allows for more time outdoors. Cleaning your closets now allows for a more free mind as you spend more time outside. The faster you can find the items you need the less time you need to waste before enjoying pleasures of life.
