Black Music Month Battle- 90’s vs. 00’s Mariah Carey

Posted on June 7, 2024June 6, 2024 by Virtual Afro Woman

It’s been a few years now since Mariah Carey has put out new music, but with such a great catalog of music, she doesn’t need to. Many fail to recognize her for her songwriting skills as she wrote most of her hits. She reaps many benefits for writing as well as singing her own songs. The song “Vision of Love” helped jumpstart her career in 1990’s and her music has carried over into the two other decades. Today I would like to put her 1990’s catalog against her 2000’s music.

In the 1990’s her albums included her self-titled album “Mariah Carey,” “Emotions,” “ Music Box,” “Merry Christmas,” “Daydream,” “Butterfly,” and “Rainbow.” Some of the songs that came from these albums were “Someday,” “Emotions,” “Dreamlover,” “Hero,” “All I Want for Christmas,” “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Honey,” “My All,” and “Heartbreaker.”

For the 2000’s, she went through a little transition period after critics had so much to say about her “Glitter” album which started off the decade. But this transition led to another run of great success with albums such as “Charmbracelet,” “The Emancipation of Mimi,” “E=MC2,” and “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.” The songs that came from these albums included “Loverboy,” “Through the Rain,” “Boy (I Need You),” “We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off,” “Don’t Forget About Us,” “Touch My Body,” “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time,” and “Obsessed.”

So, take the time to reflect on her catalog. We love all her music, but if you had to choose, which is your favorite decade from Ms. Carey? Let us know below.
