The origins of Reggae music are in Jamaica in the late 1960’s and thanks to Bob Marley it has become global. After his death in the early 1980’s, the music became even more popular and widely recognized as people from the Caribbean islands live all over the world and people from all over the world travel to the islands. So today, I would like to honor this genre of music with a battle between the 1980’s and 1990s songs that define each decade. There were many artist who straddled both but the songs and sounds as a collective for each decade are now at war.
In the 1980s, there were hit songs such as:
“Night Nurse” by Gregory Isaacs
“Here I Come” by Barrington Levy
“Telephone Love” by J.C. Lodge
“Bam Bam” by Sister Nancy
“Woo Woo Song (Bye Bye Love)” by Brian and Tony Gold
“Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley
“Redemption Song” by Bob Marley
“Pass the Dutch” by Musical Youth
“Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” by Yellowman
“Tumblin Down” by Ziggy Marley
“Sorry” by Foxy Brown
“Who’s Going to Help Me Praise” by. Tenor Saw
“One Blood” by Junior Reid
“Electric Boogie” by Marcia Griffiths
In the 1990’s the style switched a little and some included more of a blend of hip hop and the hits included:
“Ting-A-Ling” by Shabba Ranks
“Action” by Terror Fabolous and Nadine Sutherland
“Who Say Me Dun” by Cutty Ranks
“Heads High” by. Mr. Vegas
“Champion” by Buju Banton
“Who Am I?” by Beenie Man
“Romantic Call” by Patra
“Benz & The Bimmas” by Bounty Killa
“Ghetto Red Hot” by Super Cat
“Boombastic” by Shaggy
“Murder She Wrote” by Chaka Demus & Pliers
“Everyone Falls in Love” by Tantro Metro and Devonte
“You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” by Dawn Penn
So which decade is your favorite to move your hips to catch the vibe of the music?
