Posted on June 23, 2023June 22, 2023 by Virtual Afro Woman

Since the 1960’s girl groups have been a staple of music, but during those times most were doo wop formation and had similar looks. In the 1970’s, some of them expanding with a little more edge and personality, but it was the 1980’s when groups started to present their own styles and this has been the method since those times. So today let’s celebrate the girl groups of the 1980’s and 1990’s where there many to come out and become very successful.

The 1980’s we saw groups such as Sister Sledge, Mary Jane Girls, The Pointer Sisters, The Weather Girls, Klymaxx, Salt-N-Pepa, Vanity 6. Some of the hits from these groups included “I’m So Excited,” “He’s So Shy,” “We Are Family,” “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” “All Night Long,” “It’s Raining Men,” “Nasty Girl,” “The Men All Pause”, “I Miss You,” “Shake Your Thang,” and “Push It,”

In the 1990’s, we had En Vogue, SWV, TLC, Xscape, Brownstone, Total, Changing Faces, Blaque, Allure, Destiny’s Child, and Zhane amongst a few other groups. Some of the hits amongst them include “Hold On,” “Don’t Let Go,” “Waterfalls,” “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg,” “No Scrubs,” “Weak”, “I’m So into You,” “Just Kickin’ It,” “Who Can I Run To,” “If You Love Me,” “Can’t You See,” “Kissin You” “G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T,” “Bring It All to Me,” “No, No, No,” “Bills, Bills, Bills,” “Hey Mr. DJ,” and “All Cried Out.”

So, as usual if there can only be one, which decade would you choose as your favorite when it comes to girl groups?
