And That’s a Fact (Black History Month Series-Part Two)

Posted on February 9, 2024February 8, 2024 by Virtual Afro Woman

**It is now Black History Month, and the theme of the series is to honor Black Inventors. **

Raise your hand if you have a security camera or alarm system in your home?

I have one through the more popular Ring company. It is something I find very helpful in feeling secure about my home’s safety.

Through this system, I have unfortunately seen people stealing my packages. I have seen neighbors calling the cops on another due to noise.

We have seen the system transform over the years into something that is affordable to many to help with the security of their homes and small businesses.

Little did we know that a woman and her husband from Jamaica, Queens New York City (NYC) has the patent for the first closes circuit system for home security. Her name was Marie Van Brittan Brown, and her husband was Albert Brown. Marie, who grew up and NYC had a family in the 1960’s. She was a nurse by trade and her husband an electrical technician. They wanted to find a better way to protect her home from the rising crime. In 1966, with her being the lead on the invention, they got a patent that now lives on in the creation of all the systems that followed. It included a two way communication system and an alarm button to contact police. A Black women did that, and we should thank her for this great contribution to our society. Happy Black History Month! See you for part three.
