July is National Minority Mental Health Month. As mentioned previously this month is relevant due to disparities in access to care. As we all know, mental illness discriminates against no one and what can be a typical life one day, can suddenly become one of dealing with mental health the next day. We all go through stress daily. This Mindful Monday series is just about bringing mindful awareness to help us be our best self in life. A life that’s not always in our control.
For today, I want to focus on FOOD. I don’t know about you, but as I get older what I eat affects me more than when I was younger. This is because our bodies are always in a state of transition. Our cells are always regenerating. There are some that work to support our nervous system. There are others that work to support our red blood cells. And, then there are others controlling other systems. Because of these constant changes, the food we eat today may not always be kind to our body tomorrow. But the food we eat that has the appropriate nutrients gives cells the energy they need to actively work. So, what are some of these mindful suggestions…
- Antioxidants: Assist with preventing cell damage and release of free radicals in the body, To help, you can eat blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, spinach, and kale
- Vitamin C: Helps the immune system and skin collagen. Foods include, oranges, grapefruits, mangoes, cantaloupe, and brussels sprouts
- Vitamin A and K: Assist with vision, immune function, blood clotting, and cell growth. Foods include spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, and dairy such as yogurt.
- Zinc: Helps with growth and development as well as functioning of the immune system. Examples includes dark meat poultry, shellfish, legumes, and red meat
- Fiber: It adds in digetsive health to help with bowel flow. Foods to help includes Apples, pears, berries, avocado, whole grains, and seeds
So, the summertime is a time where we are outside more, eating tons of food, especially the likes of hamburgers and hot dogs at cookouts. These foods are okay in moderation, but making sure the other needs are met is the most important. Food with good nutritional benefits helps feed our brains as well. And what does a healthy brain gives you, clarity to think clearly. Have a Happy Mindful Monday!
