Today is the 4th of July or Independence Day here in the United States of America. As someone who was born and raised here, I thank my country for a few things. For allowing my mother to deliver me safely. For giving me the freedom to have an education from an early age. Being able to live alongside my family with some freedoms. And, to be treated somewhat fairly as a woman. The Declaration of Independence is the document that started this day. It’s the one that was signed in 1776 to mark the country’s independence from Great Britain. Of course, since this time the country has consistently transformed for better and for worse. Today I want to evaluate the USA. I want to grade it in relation to the words written in the document.
- We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal: B-
- As we all know, there is a class and race system here in America. Whether or not you believe it exists is your choice. With this said men and women are not equal in pay. There is 1% with excessive wealth and ~82% in the middle and lower class.
- Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness: B
- I was born here after having my ancestors kidnapped and transported many hundreds of years before. Now birth citizenship is being threatened for those born to parents who come here for freedom. Sometimes to even escape crime in their home country. Even for those born here, there is still oppression on many levels. Happiness, I have from my own personal journey. But having to work hard and pay taxes in order to live fairly comfortably until I’m 62-65 years old is a lot to ask as the body wears and tears.
- (In refence to the King of Great Britain) He has refused his assent to laws the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good: C-
- Politics can kick rocks, because so many of members we elect are doing things for personal reasons instead of the greater good. If they are doing it for the people, it’s for the minority in relation to the general population.
- (In refence to the King of Great Britain) He has dissolved representative house repeatedly, for opposing with, with manly firmness, his invasions on the rights of people: B
- So many leaders in this country thrive on control and power. Anyone who steps out of line gets removed whether in office or someone who protests their agenda peacefully.
- (In refence to the King of Great Britain) For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments: B-
- Yes, most of the laws implemented are not in the constitution, but if they’re for the greater good, why take them away. Roe vs Wade was overturned for one. Medicaid funding is being threatened. The Department of Education is changing course. You may now have kids forgo college which leads to an even more dumbing down of our country. And the list goes on.
With this, the USA Report Card grade is averaging a B-. On this holiday, I will exercise my freedom to be with my family and have a cookout. I will be celebrating the few freedoms I do have. But I will be giving this country lots of side eye. I hope we as American’s wake up from our selfish ways. Many of the points in the Declaration of Independence was about breaking free from Great Britain’s oppressive moves. But this country is now acting as Great Britain and we the people are the original 13 colonies looking to be independent of the all the chaos to live ‘free.’
