Two teenagers in love

Spotlight- Netflix’s Forever

Posted on June 4, 2025June 4, 2025 by Virtual Afro Woman

I finally finished the drama series ‘Forever’ created by Mara Brock Akil on Netflix. It’s based on the book of the same title by Judy Blume. Written in the 1970’s, this book was controversial during this time. As someone who loved reading since I was a kid. One of the author’s I read a lot as a pre-teen was Blume. In 5th grade, ‘Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret?’ was our class book. Soonafter reading it, I began purchasing more of her books on trips to the bookstore. I couldn’t believe some of them had curse words, talked about boys and wet dreams, and spoke about race. A few years later, I read her book ‘Forever,’ and I couldn’t believe I was reading a book about two teenagers first sexual experience.

As a young black girl, reading Blume’s books were relatable and I felt they were just the coming of age stories for all kids whether Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, or in between. Seeing this new show done with a Black cast, I hope the world sees it in the same way. Love is attainable to all and being taught how to navigate it depends on the individuals involved.

It is a known fact that society often see young Black children in a different light than other racial groups. A thirteen year old Black child may be viewed as an adult for unknown reasons. Their typical teenage behaviors may be viewed more harshly than other children. Watching the show was a pleasure and seeing young Black teenage love was different. In it, there is Justin, a young man from a wealthy family. He lives in a two parent household alongside his little brother. Then, there is Keisha, a young woman and star athlete. She lives in the home with her mother, with a present relationship with her father who is a traveling athlete. Plus, she has a community of other family who supported her. These two went to school together when they were much younger, but reconnects as 16 year olds.

We see their relationship ups and downs. We also, see the drama in their life away from each other. As someone who enjoys a good love story, I found this one cute. You not only see the love story of these two teenagers but you see that of people around them as well as the love other people have for them. The series already got picked up for season two, so check it out. I hope you find it a breathe of fresh air and nostalgic at the same time.
