Girl Power

Posted on August 26, 2024August 25, 2024 by Virtual Afro Woman

In the year 1920, the 19th Amendment gave women in the U.S. the right to vote. Now, on this day in 2024, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day. In this year, we have Kamala Harris who is the Democratic nominee for President. We have Simon Biles who is the most decorated female gymnast in the Olympics. The WNBA, has seen viewership and sponsorship rise in the last year. All these things have been great in the process of gaining equality since 1920, but we still have a long way to go. To honor the women in this world, here are 5 things you can do to keep girl power alive.

  1. Invest in Women: In the U.S. alone, almost 40% of businesses are women-owned, but there continue to be inequities in the system. Minority women-owned businesses still don’t get enough financial support. Try to support small and large women-owned businesses if you can. This can help them continue to grow and eventually become equal to male run businesses.
  2. Host an Event: Whether it be a book club or adult sleepover, celebrate yourself and those closest to you. Engage in joyous conversation. Laugh together. Cook together. Engage in any activity or event that allows you to feel joy.
  3. Chairty: Donate to organizations with a mission to empowering girls and women. If you’re good at leading, create your own organization.
  4. Educate: Finding ways to learn about the history of women and the fight to equality. You can find books or even watch documentaries.
  5. Support: In our day to day, providing words of encouragement to women around us makes a difference. Being there when one is in need. Just allowing yourself to be a group makes all the difference.

The time is now to make sure we go into the future with togetherness. There is still more fight to be fought. One that includes fighting for maternal health, reproductive rights, childcare rights, and fair pay amongst other things. We are over 100 years into this struggle and we should all strive and hope for more improvements in society.
