It’s a Family Affair- Thanks for Giving (Part Four-The Finale)

Posted on November 23, 2023November 23, 2023 by Virtual Afro Woman

The day is here, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here in the U.S. We all have different ways in which we celebrate the holiday, but the ultimate purpose is to have…

FAMILY TIME

As in a previous post, family can be those from the same genetic line or they can be friends, so as long as the people you decide to spend the day with are important to you, they qualify. In our day to day, each of us have many responsibilities and finding ways to spend quality time together is important and should be a priority; we all have a limited time on this earth and each day counts when we get the spend it with others. Having this holiday, when most people are off from work and school, gives us the time to discover and engage in any shared interest and be fully present in the moment. The goal here is to take this day in stride and continue to maintain proper family time on a regular basis as we go into the new year.

Some of the many ways to discover and engage on this day and beyond includes,

  • Eating together with good conversation without judgement: meaning not asking someone when they are getting married or having children but really checking in to see how one is doing as an individual or sharing old stories of actual events.
  • Watching a television show, sports event, or movie: I love to be entertained and there’s nothing like a good movie, tv show, or even a basketball game.
  • Playing board games, card games, etc.: My family and I love games such as Scattegories, Taboo, and Family Feud as well as card games such as Pokeno and Pitty Pat.
  • Attend religious service: I don’t attend church on a regular basis but for those who do, going on a major holiday can give more clarity to the meaning of the season.
  • Dancing: The idea behind line dances was a way to get a large group up and active on the dance floor, so whether going this route or just putting on your favorite tunes it can lead to more laughter and calories burned at the same time.
  • Travel: Whether it’s taking time to visit each other’s homes or renting out a home to share when you want to spend time together getting away to do something separate from everyday grind

In the end, having check ins with each other can continue to lead to the discovery of shared interest and new traditions to create and dedication to family time.
